Rider education is key to making e-scooters safer, according to research from Neuron Mobility 

Educating riders is the key to e-scooter safety, according new research from Neuron Mobility. 

According to the study, 40% of people want more rider education to improve safety in micromobility.

This has prompted Neuron, the e-bike and e-scooter operator based in Singapore, to launch a new online riding school with city-specific training, the ScootSafe Academy. 

Cormac Quinn, Neuron’s UK regional manager, said: “Safety is at the heart of everything we do at Neuron, and our new ScootSafe Academy is an exciting new way in which we are using technology to educate our new and existing riders. In an industry-first, the platform will also re-educate riders who have broken the rules by sending them bespoke training modules to help correct bad parking, dangerous riding or other violations.

“Neuron’s e-scooters have an excellent safety record and they are widely recognised for making a positive impact in the cities we operate in. However, we are always innovating to enhance rider safety, and that includes providing our riders with the very best safety education platform so they know how to use our e-scooters in a safe and responsible way.”

ScootSafe Academy is an industry-first, and will feature educational videos, quizzes, and games to help improve rider behaviour. 

Polling commissioned by Neuron and carried out by Opinium has revealed that more than 70% of people believe that rider and pedestrian safety are very important when using an e-scooter.

One in four respondents also believed that incentivising positive riding behaviour can play an important role. 

ScootSafe has been developed in consultation with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), and is an extension of Neuron’s in-person safety events. 

Riders can access the ScootSafe Academy through the Neuron app or via the company’s website. Those that complete the course will receive up to £5.50 of free credit towards future rides.  

Nathan Davies, executive head of policy and portfolio at RoSPA, said: “It’s great to see Neuron is continuing to educate riders on the rules of the road, including how to ride safely and responsibly in accordance with the highway code. Neuron’s ScootSafe Academy will act as a great digital extension to their already very successful ScootSafe events and safe riding course, created in partnership with RoSPA. However, it’s important to stress that it’s still the personal responsibility of each rider to follow the rules.

Neuron currently operates shared transport schemes in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, including Newcastle, Sunderland and Slough.
