Tier-owned Nextbike has won the tender for its first bike sharing system in Portugal.
For the tuba bike system in Barcelos, Nextbike will provide the complete hardware, consisting of 200 of the latest GPS-locatable SMARTbikes.
On behalf of the local public transport provider transdev Portugal, a comprehensive bike sharing system is being set up in the city on the Atlantic coast.
Initially distributed across around 50 virtual stations, the system can be adapted to the needs of users and expanded accordingly.
In addition, tuba bike will be integrated into the local public transport fare system, making it more accessible to the public.
A well-thought-out system is designed to enrich the city’s sustainable mobility offering and thus contribute to the transport revolution in Barcelos.

Nextbike by Tier is a European market leader in bike sharing and stands for a multimodal and socially fair transport transformation.
In 300 locations in more than 20 countries, Nextbike by Tier has established bike sharing as an elementary component of liveable cities and regions.
Integrated into public transport, the company offers millions of users the means of transport for their daily needs with pedal bikes, e-bikes and cargo bikes.
In recent times, the Leipzig-based bike sharing market leader has significantly expanded its presence, particularly in Spain where it operates 11 services.
The BizkaiBizi scheme covers the nine municipalities of Barakaldo, Berango, Bilbao, Erandio, Getxo, Leioa, Portugalete, Santurtzi and Sestao and includes 650 modern e-bikes that can be located via GPS.
On behalf of the Province of Bizkaia, BizkaiBizi enriches the local mobility offer as part of the public transport system and enables the approximately 750,000 inhabitants to use it individually and flexibly beyond municipalities.
A highlight has also been the introduction of trikes.
The nine tricycles, which are available at fixed stations, make the service particularly inclusive and accessible to a large group of users.
Now, Nextbike is launching in Portugal for the first time.
