The start of the 2025 season sees nextbike sharing insights from its 2024 data, highlighting that it has “set new standards in bike sharing”.
The nextbike Group, a leading European bike sharing provider, begins its 21st season with record figures from the past 12 months of activity:
● Over 51 million journeys in 2024 – representing a new record
● 50 % more first-time users in DACH
The Leipzig-based company is now active in almost 400 cities and 23 countries worldwide and reached a new high last year with over 51 million rides.
The continuous increase in the use of shared bikes “clearly shows that sustainable mobility has long been more than just a trend – it is part of everyday life”.
In Germany alone, around 40,000 nextbikes are already rolling through over 150 cities – and the trend is rising. DACH growth is particularly strong, with March 2025, already seeing the number of first-time users 50% higher than in the previous year.
nextbike in the European market
After France in 2024, nextbike has now also entered the Belgian market in early 2025 and further consolidated its position as a leading provider in the European bike sharing market with the launch of a regional bike sharing system in the greater Brussels area (Vlaamse Rand).
In recent weeks, systems have been implemented in León and Mulhouse (France) as well as in Braunschweig and Leipzig. This means that fiveof the 39 projects won last have already been successfully implemented.
In the last three months alone, the company has won a further 13 contract award procedures, including in Cergy-
Pontoise and Wroclaw.
The business reflects that “this not only illustrates the strategic promotion of bike sharing in the context of local public transport, but also the Europe-wide recognition of nextbike as a reliable partner with many years of expertise and implementation competence”.
With the recent acquisition of nextbike Polska, nextbike is increasingly focusing its expansion strategy on Central, Eastern and Northern Europe.
New app launched to enhance user experience
Just in time for the start of the season, nextbike is taking the user experience to a new level of innovation.
– with the launch of the enhanced app version.
At the heart of the technical innovations is the completely redesigned map view: clearer, smarter and more precise. Return areas are not only more clearly recognisable, but are also supplemented by context-related information such as service fees.
The wallet has also been optimised: Users now have even faster access to all tariffs, bookings, and
payment methods – in a transparent and structured display.
Another milestone is the new in-app support function: reports and inquiries to customer service can now
be processed directly and seamlessly via the app.
The app – developed entirely in-house – is seen as “an outstanding positioning thanks to the technical innovation that has characterised nextbike since it was founded”.
Outlook: nextbike launches new bikes
In May, nextbike will launch the next generation of bike sharing, with the introduction of the new SMARTbike 2 UE and e-SMARTbike UE SWAP models.
After intensive in-house development work, both models – the classic bike and the e-bike – will celebrate their premiere in real-life operation in Leipzig, Wroclaw and Leverkusen. Following the practical tests, the start of series production is planned.
