Canterbury Partners with Beryl to Launch new Public e-bike Scheme

Beryl has launched a new public e-bike scheme in Canterbury. From today, 100 e-bikes will be available for residents and visitors to hire, enabling them to commute or explore the city with quiet, affordable, and sustainable micromobility.

Not only will the scheme provide Canterbury with a more active and enjoyable form of transport, but it will also help to reduce congestion and car reliance. Users can register for Canterbury Beryl Bikes via the Beryl app, available on iOS and Android

20+ stations and dual security

The scheme will use Segway B200 e-bikes with the latest safety and security technology, including both physical, stem-mounted locks and an integrated hub-lock that is disabled via the Beryl app to end a ride. Users may start and end their rides at one of more than 20 designated geofenced stations, providing ready access and convenience.

Bays will be conveniently located at key transport hubs and landmarks, including Station Road East and West, The Beaney, and The Riverside, with further expansion into residential and community areas like Wincheap and Kent & Canterbury Hospital following shortly after.

I am delighted that we’re launching this scheme. It is something we’ve wanted to do since we came into power. It’s an idea that people suggest to me on a regular basis, and these particular bikes will really help to link up different parts of the city for locals and visitors alike – Cabinet member for transport, Cllr Alex Ricketts

Accessible transport with a two-tier model

Canterbury Beryl Bikes will use a tiered pricing model, allowing for a variety of use cases. Riders can select from either Pay as You Go (PAYG) or a bundle, outlined below.

Plan Type  Pricing & Value
PAYG  £1 Unlock + £0.16 per minute
50-Minute Bundle  £7.50 (£0.15/min)
100-Minute Bundle  £14.00 (£0.14/min)
200-Minute Bundle  £26.00 (£0.13/min)
300-Minute Bundle  £36.00 (£0.12/min)

Beryl CEO, Phil Ellis, added: “Whether you are a commuter, student, or tourist, these e-bikes are the perfect way to travel and explore Canterbury. It is fantastic to see the adoption of more sustainable and accessible transport options in this amazing city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We are pleased to be working with the Canterbury City Council on a long-term agreement, with an optional extension, securing a micromobility future for residents and visitors.”

Beryl is championing greener travel options to help reduce road congestion and improve air quality and public health. It currently operates 18 public bike, e-bike, and e-scooter schemes, delivered in partnership with local Councils. The UK’s e-scooter trials are approved to continue until 31 May 2028, providing the Department for Transport sufficient time to evaluate their success.
