French e-bike battery pioneer Gouach has announced that its repairable, fireproof and waterproof e-bike battery casing is now scheduled for a September 2024 launch.
The battery casing represents the next step for the Bourdaux-based business which has been a vocal promotor of sustainable solutions for LEV.
The business has attracted substantial investment over the past two years, as well as winning awards for its patented battery design which enables the business to, “…reduce by 80% the environmental impact of lithium batteries.”
The battery unit has been designed to be manufactured as a solderless battery, which, Gouach states, makes it repairable in less than 10 minutes. In addition to this, with lithium-ion cells now replaceable, the Battery Management System (BMS) is guaranteed for 10 years.

The business points out that the ability to replace battery cells when they are drained makes it possible to save up to $2000 over 10 years. Gouach also highlights that “each cell you up-cycle saves 250kg of soil”.
2023 saw the business win the Taipei Cycle Gold Award – Green Prize for its eco-designed battery.
Speaking following the 2023 Taipei award win, Alexandre Vallette, CEO and founder of Gouach reflected: “Our mission is to challenge the model of planned obsolescence of batteries and to make repairable batteries the norm within the electric bicycle and e-kick scooter industry.
“This award recognises our commitment to sustainability and innovation in battery design.”

Making the product easily repairable through safe, quick, and easy cell replacement, reduces waste, and extends the life of components. Critically the business points to a “seamless compatibility with 90% of bikes”.

Above and beyond the unique, solder-free, construction, the ability to take a Gouach battery on a plane is also an attention-grabbing feature, especially when the brand claims users can “Disassemble the battery in 5 minutes to make it flight-ready”.
Take Control through an open-source App
The business has developed an app – which is not needed to use the battery – enabling the viewing of battery data, setting configuration when changing cell type or motor, and getting safety alerts.
As an open-sourced solution this also means development work can be done to add additional features.
