E-scooter rental app Voi hopes to replace one billion car journeys by 2030 

The expanding scooter and e-bike rental app Voi hopes to replace one billion car journeys over the next 20 years, as the company has also committed to being ‘carbon positive’ by 2030. 

Founded in 2018, the Swedish micromobility firm has been growing across Europe, now operating in 70 cities across 11 countries. 

Voi CEO Fredrik Hjelm, speaking at an International Transport Forum event in Glasgow, has announced his ambition to become climate positive across all its towns and cities, which means reducing more greenhouse gas emissions that its value chain emits, without relying on carbon offsets. 

Hjelm said: “Voi’s e-scooters and e-bikes are already playing a critical role in cities in providing convenient and sustainable alternatives to cars. Climate change presents a serious threat to the livability of cities around the world and we want to do everything in our power to take action. We want to go beyond carbon neutrality through offsets and become a climate-positive company. We’ll do this by implementing new climate measures such as sourcing European-made battery cells and circular vehicles.” 

Voi’s commitment includes a fleet of fully electric operations fleets, which will be in place by early 2023, with fleets and warehouses powered by renewable energy. 

The company also hopes to produced all its battery cells in Europe, offering a 50 per cent lower carbon footprint.

Voi also wants to work towards a circular production chain by 2030.

Further goals include supporting public transport by acting as a first and last mile solution for commuters, campaigning for safer walking and cycling infrastructure, and the aim of replacing cars, with an average of 16.1% of Voi trips currently replacing motor vehicle journeys. 

If Voi can replace one billion car journeys, that would reduce direct emissions from cars by two million tonnes by 2030.
