Swiss shared e-bike provider Pick-e-Bike, part of Baselland Transport (BLT) AG, has launched a pioneering solution which enables its S-pedelec to be ridden as regular e-bikes.
Through the Pick-e-Bike app, shared bikes are transformed from 45 km/h S-pedelec into a 25 km/h limited regular e-bike.
‘Speed-Setting’ makes the operator’s bike share scheme accessible to those aged 16 and over, critically also enabling users without a driving license.
Commenting on the launch, Adrian Houriet, a combined mobility observer, and head of parking at Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), notes: “The Speed-Setting pilot project of Pick-e-Bike, in cooperation with the Federal Roads Office FEDRO, detects whether someone is registered with or without a driving licence and thus adjusts the maximum speed from 45 km/h to 25 km/h via remote access.”
The on-the-face-of-it simple solution is reportedly a world first, making the Basel-based pilot scheme a point of significant interest for the wider shared micro-mobility industry.
The Pick-e-Bike app is developed by ElectricFeel, whose software solution comes in two parts – the app for riders to rent vehicles, and the operating system which enables the Pick-e-Bike team to manage its fleet, onboard riders, and maintain vehicles.
For the Pick-e-Bike rider app, ElectricFeel’s designers worked closely with Stephan Brode. CEO of Pick-e-Bike, to customize the experience: Logos, colour schemes, images, custom sounds, and a unique loading animation made the design reflect Pick-e-Bike’s brand.
ElectricFeel also trained the Pick-e-Bike team on how to get the most out of the fleet management software. This helped the shared mobility provider manage battery swapping, set up maintenance facilities, and define the limits of where the e-bikes could be used.

Pick-e-Bike now has a fleet of over 330 e-bikes, with 21,000 signed-up riders, and has provided more than 700,000 km of emissions-free travel.
The Swiss business also offers services for companies, delivering its sharing system for e-bikes and e-scooters, enabling a company to offer its employees an attractive additional service, supporting flexible forms of mobility, whilst establishing an innovative and future-oriented mobility solution in companies.
