“Small number of idiots” will not halt e-scooter trials

The roll-out of e-scooters throughout Teeside is expected to go ahead despite reports of misuse.

The company behind the UK’s first trial rental scheme, Ginger, said it recognises the issues and is making changes, including increased checks.

The rides are expected to be available in Redcar and Hartlepool in late August.

50 e-scooters are currently in use in Middlesborough, and around 1,500 people are said to have used them since they were launched on 13th July.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said he does not want a “small number of idiots” to derail a promising scheme.

“Ginger has put steps in place to ensure that underage riders cannot use the e-scooters,” he said. “Therefore it would seem that adults are hiring the e-scooters and giving them to people underage.

This is not only against the rules, but it is also illegal.

“Ginger are aware of this happening and those responsible are being banned from using the e-scooters immediately. We will continue to monitor the trial to improve the experience for not only the riders, but everyone in Middlesbrough.”
